As a result of the spread of the ransomware, Cryptolocker, on the internet, it has become common knowledge that there are certain files which are more at risk than others. For many people one of those files is an AutoCAD drawings file. If you have used AutoCAD for any period of time, you will have inevitably created drawings on your computer system which have been not stored to an external drive or other safe location. This post explores what this new ransomware does and how you can protect yourself against it. It also offers generic advice about saving all important computer data to an external hard drive as well as cloud storage services such as Dropbox or Google Drive. In addition, it offers a free program which you can use to scan all of your computer files and check whether any of them have been encrypted by this dangerous new breed of malaware. The file format most at risk from the new ransomware is a file with a .dwg or .dxf extension. This is not surprising as it is the native file format used by AutoCAD, a very commonly used computer aided design program. The other high risk file type is those that end with .3dm or .max. These are both part of the Autodesk 3D Studio Max program which was discontinued in 2013 but remains in use as some companies still need to support legacy projects created on this software package. The distinction between other files and those with the .dwg or .dxf extension is that the former should always be read-only and the later can be read and written to. If you choose an alternative file extension such as .a3d, the ransomware will not encrypt your files. The only way to protect your files from being encrypted by this new type of malware is to save them with a different extension from that listed above. This new ransomware has been named by many as Cryptolocker after a file called Cryptolocker.A which is believed to have been created by the authors of the new ransomware virus. It is designed to encrypt as many as 27 different file types including those mentioned above as well as those with the following extensions: .bmp,.doc,.jpg, .pdf,.pps, .ppsm, .ppsx, .ppt, .pub,.rar,.rtf, .sldm,.sldx, .svg and many more. The results of having your files encrypted by Cryptolocker are shown below. As you can see from the image on this page it is hard to believe that anyone would agree to pay the ransom even if it were possible. The underlying assumption of this malware is that people will be willing to pay $300 or £200 or equivalent. That is a crazy amount of money to pay just to recover some files. To create the encryption key the authors of this malware use advanced mathematics which rely on prime numbers. A prime number is one that cannot be divided by any other number except one and itself. For example, 3 is a prime number as it can only be divided by 1 and 3, but 27 is not as it can be divided by 5. You can see some examples of prime numbers on this page. These are the types of math problems that you used to have to solve in school if you had math problems above your level.
